Introduction

Amplify the voice of local communities, protect the environment, promote human rights

Over the last thirty years (1995-2025) the main body of my work has been dedicated to serving the people and protecting the environment of Madagascar, delivered through my role and endeavours with the Andrew Lees Trust (ALT UK).

I have been privileged to work closely with local actors and communities, as well as local, national and international agencies and technical experts. Their knowledge, wisdom, insights and leadership have been fundamental in developing meaningful strategies, positive outcomes on the ground and delivering long term change. In particular, building upon local capabilities to strengthen civil society and promote local ownership – exemplified in ALT UK’s hand over to local Malagasy NGO Andry Lalana Tohana Madagascar (ALT MG)

The last ten years, whilst no longer in the field, my work has been research based working in solidarity and collaboration with Malagasy civil society actors and environmental and human rights defenders, advocating the rights of mine affected communities in southern Madagascar.

The Andrew Lees Trust closed in 2025. Now, as an independent researcher, writer and campaigner, I remain grateful for continued collaboration with local actors, civil society organisations, experts, academics and human rights defenders, in Madagascar and from all the world, to join wider efforts for social and environmental justice and transformative change.
